Hi, I've been learning ROS for some time now with the courses. Now I wanted to do some tests with the Kinect. But I can't find any instructions how to use the Kinect with ROS Meldodic and Ubuntu 18.04.

Is there a course that covers this? Or is there another source that describes it?

I have tried this tutorial https://www.20papercups.net/programming/kinect-on-ubuntu-with-openni/ But that didn't work.

Thanks!

I presume you are talking about the real Kinect (not the simulated one).

In order to use the real Kinect with ROS, you first need to launch the driver that connects to the kinect device and publishes its information in the for of a ROS topic pointcloud. In order to get the driver you need to install freenect (http://wiki.ros.org/libfreenect).

Since freenect is not available for Melodic, you need to download the source for Lunar and compile in Melodic.

Okay, thanks. That's what I wanted to know.
